NCDS DataBytes Lunchtime Webinar Series: Visualization for Data Science

May 3, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

DataBytes is an NCDS-sponsored lunchtime webinar series that gives our members and the larger data community the chance to discuss the most pressing and interesting issues in data science. Webinars are generally held on the first Wednesday of every month, excluding July. All webinars are easily accessible from the NCDS homepage and from this page. Talks generally last 30 to 45 minutes, followed by Q and A, and conclude no later than 1 p.m. Questions will be taken via chat. Audience members are encouraged to call in using their computer rather than using the call-in number.

About the Talk:

Data science skills are increasingly important for research and industry projects.  With complex data science projects, however, come complex needs for understanding and communicating analysis processes and results.  The rise of data science has accompanied a comparable rise in business intelligence and the demand for visualizations and dashboards that can explain models, summarize results, assist with decision making, and even predict outcomes.  Ultimately, an analyst’s data science toolbox is incomplete without visualization skills.  This talk will explore the landscape of visualization for data science – using visualization for data exploration and communication, reproducible approaches to visualization, and how to develop better instincts for visualization choice and graphic design.

About the Speaker:

Angela Zoss began work as Duke University Libraries’ first Data Visualization Coordinator in the summer of 2012. While helping to develop this new position at Duke, she has created new workshops and short courses on visualization; consulted with students, researchers, and faculty members on research projects; and helped to introduce visualization concepts and tools into many undergraduate and graduate courses. She co-organizes a weekly talk series on visualization topics and is collaborating within and outside the Duke community to improve instructional and technical support for visualization projects. She holds a Master of Science in Communication from Cornell University and is pursuing a doctorate in Information Science from Indiana University, where she taught a semester-long graduate course in Information Visualization. Angela regularly presents on visualization topics at local, regional, and national events within the library and data science community.  Her specialties include information visualization, network visualization, and text analysis.
