South Hub Data Science Roundtable: Role of Data Science in the Economy @ Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI)
Sep 27 @ 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

Media reports showcase that we are in the midst of a Big Data revolution that will impact all of our lives. To date, much of the research around this revolution has focused specifically on Data Science; however, in this roundtable, we will discuss the Data Economy.

The North Carolina Office of Science, Technology and Innovation recently partnered with the National Consortium for Data Science to investigate the Data Economy in North Carolina by determining the current role of data science in the state’s economy; the potential of data science to change the economy; and to what extent Big Data is an actual industry or an enabler of all industries. The roundtable will begin with an overview of the report’s results, and then panelists will answer questions around the role of data science in the economy.

To participate live via WebEx: Join the day of the event. Please RSVP to subers@renci.org if you plan to attend in person.

Microsoft Azure Training @ RENCI 100 Europa Drive
Sep 28 @ 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

Please join Microsoft, the South Big Data Innovation Hub, and RENCI for a Microsoft Azure training on Thursday, September 28, 2017, from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm ET. Microsoft Azure is a growing collection of integrated cloud services that developers and IT professionals use to build, deploy, and manage applications through our global network of datacenters. With Azure, you get the freedom to build and deploy wherever you want, using the tools, applications, and frameworks of your choice.

The Azure workshop will familiarize researchers and data scientists with big data storage, machine learning and advanced analytics, cognitive intelligence, container and batch services. Instruction is hands-on; participants will spend most of the day working on proctored labs. Each attendee will receive an Azure Pass with a $500 Azure credit that can be used up to one month after the workshop. The training is free if you register through this South Hub invitation.

Coffee & Viz – Art at the Atomic Scale: probing the nature of material properties with electron microscopy @ Teaching and Visualization Lab at James B. Hunt Library, NCSU
Oct 27 @ 9:15 am – 10:30 am

Event Description:

To explore the atomic scale, scientists use very large and powerful microscopes that can capture pictures of atoms. Like looking through the telescope to see the stars, these electron microscopes make it possible to see how atoms arrange themselves to form a material. In this seminar Dr. James LeBeau, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, will discuss works from an exhibit aimed to translate science to the general public through an artistic expression of the arrangement of atoms in materials, as captured with the scanning transmission electron microscope. This “atom art” shows people that we can directly see atoms, and the orderly, often beautiful, way that atoms are arranged in materials. How those atoms are arranged, and the patterns they make, is key to understanding a material’s properties – and how engineers can control those properties.

Other Information:

Light refreshments will be available in an adjacent space beginning at 9:15 a.m. To increase the sustainability of this program, please consider bringing your own reusable coffee mug.
