Coffee & Viz After Hours – Special Guest Mona Chalabi @ Hunt Library, Auditorium
Mar 27 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

How Numbers Can Mislead (and how to avoid being misled)

Whether we’re hearing about election forecasts or crowd size estimates, many of us feel increasingly distrustful of numbers.

Data visualization can help – as long as it’s honest and inclusive. In this special presentation of Coffee & Viz, Chalabi will discuss  ways to make data visualizations that fulfill both of those criteria and help rebuild the public’s trust in numbers and facts.

Mona Chalabi is considered one of the most influential people in the young field of data journalism. Often drawing data visualizations by hand, her approach is accessible and inspiring. Chalabi is currently data editor at Guardian US. She previously worked at FiveThirtyEight, the Bank of England, and the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Reserve your free ticket here. Complimentary coffee and sweets will be available at 6:30 p.m.

Commuting, Voting and the Off-Label Use of Data with Elaine McVey @ Renaissance Computing Institute, Suite 590, Biltmore Conference Room, Room 534
Apr 18 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

The modern practice of data science often involves approaching datasets differently than in traditional statistics. Two analyses will be presented, both of which use combinations of public datasets in expected and “off-label” ways. One addresses the need to simulate realistic commuting patterns, and the other evaluates the effects of North Carolina voting site decisions. In the process of telling the stories of these two data science projects, we’ll have an opportunity to reflect on the nature of data science.
