Director of Computing, Data Infrastructure, and Services

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, or designees, this position provides advanced computational and data infrastructure vision, planning, and support, along with research software planning and support for RENCI projects that involve local and national collaborations with researchers and computational scientists. The position requires working with the research groups at RENCI in planning, deploying, and supporting the computational and data needs of these groups. In particular, the position focuses on overall IT security, deployment, and operation of large-scale advanced cyberinfrastructure, tiered data solutions, and allied hardware and software to advance RENCI’s scientific and research goals. The person filling this position is expected to assume a leadership role in the design and maintenance of the RENCI Europa data center, the RENCI Secure Data Enclave, as well as the supervision of a team of IT professionals to achieve the aforementioned goals across systems deployed both on-premise and in various commercial clouds. Further, the position requires the supervision of vendor management and desktop support management services. Overall, this person has the dual roles of providing IT leadership as well as the management and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the RENCI CI personnel and infrastructure to support a large set of projects.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Specialized knowledge of enterprise environments and scientific parallel computing and computational science. Direct experience designing and providing dynamically scalable computing environments constructed with containers, container orchestration in the public cloud, and on-premise infrastructures providing heterogeneous resource classes including accelerators like GPUs is highly desirable. Experience providing continuous integration services like automated build servers, Docker registries, and vulnerability scanning tools like Jenkins & Harbor. Experience with public key infrastructures and an understanding of OAuth2, OpenID Connect, and related systems. Understanding of and interest in ZeroTrust and related security architectures. Knowledge of automated monitoring systems, options for building reliable, self-healing systems including health checks, autoscaling, etc. Ability to manage a team providing computational tools like Apache Spark, Subset to research communities. Demonstrated knowledge of infrastructure automation approaches like Terraform, Ansible, Docker, and related tools. Hands-on design experience with: Microsoft Active Directory, SQL, System Center products With High Availability features. Advanced experience with virtualization environments including VMware and vSphere. In-depth knowledge of enterprise storage architecture and protocols (SMS, NFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel), Experience with NetApp storage desirable Design and operation of enterprise-class networks and to software-defined networking. Experience in data center facility management, large-scale high-performance storage and enterprise tape backup systems. Proven ability to build collaborative efforts with appropriate departments, for self-education, interdisciplinary study and inquiry, excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal communication, human relations and team-building skills, ability to foster and maintain collaborations with both academic and industrial researchers. Ability to assist in proposal development and bridge across disciplines, ability to work with scientists and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

MBA or Master’s degree in computer science or a reasonably related field preferred. At least five years of senior-level infrastructure design and administration experience is desirable.
