Further Development of AI Tool for Extraction of Roadside Hazards from Videolog Data and LIDAR

Overview

During a successful collaboration between NC DOT, UNC Highway Safety Research Center, and Volpe Transportation Systems Center, RENCI created a prototype AI system for locating Roadside hazards along rural roads in North Carolina.  This project extends that work to extract geometric information from a combined videolog and LIDAR data package to create actionable information for NC DOT users.

RENCI’s Role

RENCI is responsible for developing the safety tool leveraging AI and machine learning expertise including design and implementation of the road hazard annotation tool, data management, and AI algorithms.
