Grand Challenges in Computational Materials Design

January 15, 2013 - January 16, 2013

The goal of this two-day workshop is to germinate new and creative interdisciplinary approaches to meeting the grand challenges of predictive materials design that complement and strengthen traditional uni-disciplinary research. The intent is not to create a series of talks among experts from a single field, but rather to foster a creative environment out of which new ideas will be pursued. Attendees will include an inter-disciplinary mix of academic, government and industrial researchers in computational physics, statistics, engineering, applied math, and computer science.

In 2011 the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy announced the Materials Genome Initiative: A Renaissance of American Manufacturing (MGI) as part of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership. The initial rounds of MGI funding have been administered, and new research centers, teams and single-PI efforts are beginning to form. This workshop will provide a forum to identify the next set of critical grand challenges in computational and theoretical materials design, and to bring together potential teams of researchers with the interdisciplinary skills and expertise needed to meet these challenges.

The workshop will begin after lunch on January 15, 2013, with a reception for attendees at the end of the first day. The second day will start at 8:00 am and will conclude in the late afternoon. A continental breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks will be provided on the second day.

There is a $50.00 non-refundable fee to complete your registration. This will cover the reception in the evening of the first day, a continental breakfast and lunch on the second day, and several coffee breaks. The deadline to register is December 15, 2012.
