Effectively Utilizing US National Cyberinfrastructure Resources

Title: Effectively Utilizing US National Cyberinfrastructure Resources
Location: French room 2237, Duke University
Description: John McGee the Director of Cyberinfrastructure RENCI (The Renaissance Computing Institute) UNC at Chapel Hill will present an Adventures in Theory Lecture.

Abstract: Simulation, computation, data processing and management are increasingly becoming as complex as they are necessary for education and scientific discovery. NSF, DOE, NIH and other federal agencies provide free cyberinfrastructure capacity and services for academic research, however it can be difficult and cumbersome to find out what is available and how to best access these services. The complexity of IT and computer science for difficult research problems often requires a significant commitment on the part of a researcher to understand, make use of, and integrate these services at large scale. In this presentation we discuss various CI providers, specifically the Open Science Grid and TeraGrid, provide real world examples of large scale science being conducted on these systems, and dissect the infrastructure and processes that enable it to be successful with reasonable efforts on behalf of researchers.
