Title: How Relational Databases Actually Work
Location: Biltmore Conference Room – RENCI anchor at Europa Center
Description: Title: How Relational Databases Actually Work
Presenter: Erik Scott
Abstract: We have a tendency to treat the relational database, like mySQL, Postgres, or Oracle, as a “black box” – we store data in it and ask queries of it with little regard to what’s actually going on in there. A little bit of understanding, though, goes a long way toward making the process more efficient. In this talk, we’ll start with a very quick refresher on what relational databases are, then we’ll move to how data is stored, how the results of our queries get moved around, and the most important topic of all – how the mysterious “optimizer” works it’s voodoo to make our queries run so fast.
